Virgin Voyages' guide to Willemstad, Curaçao

A multi-colored gateway to quintessential shopping, museums, dolphin-inspired diving adventures and white sandy beaches.

Willemstad

The Caribbean’s little taste of Europe

One of the most unique cities in a country full of unique cities is Willemstad. The dynamic capital of Curaçao, this beautifully quaint city will immediately transport you from the typical beachy-town vibe of most Caribbean cities to the vibes of a bustling European metropolis.
Comprised of two distinct historic districts split by the enchanting St. Anna Bay, sailors will be able to explore both Punda – the side packed with breathtaking museums and swarming shops, and Otrobanda – translated to “The Other Side” – this is the perfect place for adventurers looking to delve into the local culture.

Aside from the stunning vibrant architecture that won Willemstad an elite UNESCO Heritage site designation, this Caribbean jewel provides a plethora of opportunities for every traveler. Whether you’re looking to explore ancient caves comprised of coral reef, snorkel the blue waters of the appropriately named Blue Bay, achieve the pinnacle of self-care at a local aloe farm or to take a sunset sail while sipping your favorite cocktail – the immaculate vibes of Willemstad will make you want to return to Curaçao again and again.
Shore Excursions

Keeping it quaint in Curaçao

Luxurious landscapes, caves of coral and tenacious turtles.

Willemstad by Trolley

Head across Queen Emma’s pontoon bridge, where a rainbow of harborside stalls and bouncing boats trade everything from fish & produce to spices & cloth. Ride into Scharloo, where ornate facades are on display over the homes and municipal buildings before visiting the island’s incredible cathedral and the stunning Fort Amsterdam. This trolley ride gives you the opportunity to take in all the electric colors and eclectic architecture of Curaçao’s captivating capital while covering maximum ground.

Cave Mazes & Market Places

Sally forth to the Hato Caves, an incredible labyrinth of stalactite/stalagmite formations. Wander through dimly-lit chamber halls — once home to native tribes — checking out the different figures carved into the limestone. Visit the 17th-century Fort Amsterdam, built to guard against marauding pirates and dueling European settlers over the centuries. You’ll be taken to the central marketplace to get lost in the maze of stalls before returning to the ship — or set out on your own adventure.

Beach Hop & Snorkel Stops

Visit two different areas to check out incredible sea species. First, head to the wild shores of the west coast to visit a marine park. While somewhat remote and rocky, it offers a great opportunity to explore a thriving aquatic habitat. Keep your eyes peeled for turtles — they are known to frequent the area. Then, you’ll visit Cas Abao Beach for another round of snorkeling and chillaxing with a beach chair and cocktail while getting in some incredible seaside splendor.
