Virgin Voyages' guide to Portland, Maine

Portland is Maine at its most iconic. Lobster boats share the harbor with schooners, island-dotted waters stretch toward the horizon, and lighthouses stand watch along a rugged shore. The coast isn't the backdrop. It's the reason you want to be here.

PORTLAND

Lobsters, Lighthouses & Long Views

Portland unfolds a little differently.

The harbor comes first. Fishing boats bob alongside ferries bound for distant islands. Seabirds ride the coastal breeze overhead. The scent of salt air follows you from the waterfront into the heart of the city.
Start in the Old Port, where cobblestone streets and red-brick warehouses tell the story of a city shaped by the sea. Once a bustling maritime hub, these historic buildings now house independent boutiques, galleries, cafés, oyster bars, and some of New England's most celebrated restaurants. It's easy to wander here. Easier still to lose track of time.

Look beyond the harbor and you'll discover another side of Portland. Casco Bay stretches toward the horizon, dotted with nearly 800 islands. Some are home to tight-knit coastal communities. Others feel untouched by time. Ferries come and go. Sailboats drift past. The water is always part of the story.

Then there are the lighthouses. Standing watch along Maine's rugged coastline, they've guided mariners for generations. Portland Head Light, perched above the rocky shores of Cape Elizabeth, remains one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world — and for good reason.

Of course, no visit to Portland is complete without a taste of the coast itself. Lobster rolls piled high. Fresh oysters shucked to order. Chowder that warms you from the inside out. Around here, the connection between sea and table isn't a trend. It's a way of life.

Take your time. Follow the waterfront. Hop a ferry. Order the lobster. Because Portland isn't a place to rush through.

It's a place to settle into.

DISCOVER MORE SHORE THINGS

The islands sit quietly on the horizon. Lobster boats drift across Casco Bay. Lighthouses stand watch along the rocky shoreline. The water, the harbor, the scattered islands — they don't rush you out. They let the moment stretch.

The ferry ride to Peaks Island, where life seemed to move at its own unhurried pace. The salty breeze winding through Portland's Old Port as fishing boats rocked gently against the docks. The postcard-perfect streets of Kennebunkport, lined with coastal charm and stories carried in from the sea.

Warm butter dripping from a freshly cracked lobster roll. Briny oysters pulled from cold Atlantic waters. Chowder rich with cream and seafood. The scent of salt air mingling with fresh-baked bread and the day's catch arriving at the harbor. Every bite feels connected to the coastline itself — simple, honest, and unmistakably Maine.

Portland doesn't try too hard. It doesn't need to.

It's coastal New England at its best. Authentic. Welcoming. A place where the ocean shapes everything — from the views to the food to the rhythm of everyday life.
