MIAMI – March 26, 2026 – Today marks the first time Virgin Voyages, the adult-by-design cruise line, will transit the Panama Canal. Brilliant Lady is celebrating the brand’s inaugural crossing through one of the world's most complex and historic waterways. To bring this milestone moment to cruise fans and audiences worldwide, Virgin Voyages will host "Sea It Live!", an eight-hour YouTube broadcast capturing the full transit – from first lock to final exit – in its entirety. A 900-foot ship. A 125-foot lock. Eight hours. No edits.
The crossing marks a pivotal moment in Brilliant Lady's first year. After launching in New York in September of 2025, the brand's fourth and newest Lady Ship is heading west through the Panama Canal to begin her debut season in Los Angeles. This summer, she’ll also become the first Virgin Voyages ship to sail to Alaska, adding the brand to a short list of cruise lines offering adult-only Alaska voyages.
WHAT IS SEA IT LIVE?
"Sea It Live!" is Virgin Voyages' first-ever live-streamed ship transit. Over the course of the crossing, the ship will move through a series of lock chambers across the Isthmus of Panama. During the crossing, Brilliant Lady will:
- Navigate multiple lock systems using gravity-fed water levels
- Traverse narrow channels requiring precise alignment
- Operate under the direction of Canal pilots overseeing each movement
Behind the scenes, the process is a carefully orchestrated sequence of timing, communication and control.
“Bringing Brilliant Lady through the Panama Canal is a defining moment for our fleet and for our Crew,” said Frank Weber, SVP of Fleet Operations. “This is one of the most technically demanding passages in the world, and it requires absolute precision from our marine and technical team. From propulsion to bridge operations, every element of the ship has been carefully configured and planned to navigate environments like this while maintaining the seamless experience our Sailors expect.”
THE ENGINEERING BEHIND THE CROSSING
Brilliant Lady's three sister ships were never able to transit the Panama Canal. Their lifeboat davits and the Deck 7 aft overhang at The Dock pushed the ships' beam beyond the Canal's strict dimensional limits.
For Brilliant Lady, Virgin Voyages' naval architects redesigned the ship specifically to unlock this route with a custom davit system that pulls the lifeboats further inboard. They also removed the aft overhang on Deck 7 entirely and select mid-ship balconies on Deck 8 were reconfigured into a new cabin category: the Slightly Smaller Sea Terrace, now retrofitted with not one, but two of the brand's iconic red hammocks to compensate for the reduced depth.
These modifications are what make today's crossing possible, and what opened a new region for Virgin Voyages.
THE HOSTS
Guiding viewers through the crossing will be members of Virgin Voyages' Happenings Cast, our signature ensemble of onboard hosts and performers that elevated the traditional cruise director role. Featured cast members include:
- Abi Weigold, The Hostess, who holds the distinction of being the only performer to have launched all four Virgin Voyages Lady Ships since 2021
- Oscar Leonard, The Charmer, a London-born magician returning from Brilliant Lady's original launch cast
- Kara Kature, The Diva, a fan-favorite drag performer from Ireland and a veteran of three Virgin Voyages ships.
