Bacalar Lagoon Escape: Sailing the Seven Colors
Water so clear it changes color with the depth, and a lagoon that has been hiding in plain sight on the far side of the Yucatán.
Your pontoon crosses water that shifts from pale turquoise to deep blue as the bottom drops away. The Canal de los Piratas earned its name from the buccaneers who once sheltered here. Isla de los Pájaros is quieter, sheltering tropical birds instead. Then come Cenote Negro and Cenote Esmeralda, each a different shade, and Cenote Cocalitos, where stromatolites — living fossils, among the oldest life on the planet — sit just beneath the surface. You'll swim, then eat, with the lagoon in view.
