How our Crew made waves for World Oceans Month 2026

Small actions. Global impact. See how our Crew gave back to the oceans and communities we visit.

Virgin Voyages

The ocean connects every voyage we take, every destination we explore, and every unforgettable moment at sea. It's also a responsibility we all share.

Throughout World Oceans Month, Virgin Voyages Crew members around the globe celebrated our purpose of creating an epic sea change for all by rolling up their sleeves and giving back to the places that make our voyages possible. From restoring habitats and cleaning coastlines to supporting local conservation efforts, a variety of activities brought our shipboard and shoreside teams together to make a meaningful difference.

Every project looked a little different, but they all shared one goal: leaving the dreamy cruise destinations we visit a little better than we found them.

A month of meaningful action

These numbers tell an incredible story, but they're only part of it. During World Oceans Month, our global Crew showed up in droves:

  • 19 environmental and community events
  • 2,341 volunteer hours
  • 676 Crew volunteers
  • Nearly 1,000 cigarette butts removed from the streets of Skagway, Alaska

Behind every hour volunteered and every piece of litter collected, was a Crew member choosing to invest their time in protecting the places we sail. Whether planting trees, restoring natural habitats, cleaning beaches, or partnering with local organizations, each action helped support healthier ecosystems and stronger communities.

Because caring for the ocean doesn't begin and end at the water's edge; it extends to the neighborhoods, parks, beaches, and coastlines connected to it.

Regenerative tourism in action

One of the month's standout moments took place in Skagway, where 25 Crew members from our newest ship, Brilliant Lady, partnered with the Skagway Visitor Department and the Skagway Traditional Council Environmental Department on a community science initiative.

Rather than simply visiting the destination, our Crew became active participants in caring for it.

After learning how to use ArcGIS-based citizen science technology, volunteer teams spread out across town to document environmental conditions, map stormwater infrastructure, identify areas of concern, and remove litter from public spaces. Together, they collected nearly 1,000 discarded cigarette butts while gathering valuable data that will help inform future environmental education and stewardship efforts.

While a single cigarette butt may seem insignificant, tobacco filters contain plastic fibers that can remain in the environment for years, eventually breaking down into microplastics that threaten waterways, wildlife, and marine ecosystems. Removing them today helps protect tomorrow's oceans.

Just as importantly, the project reflected something bigger than a cleanup. It demonstrated how tourism can become a force for good when visitors, local organizations, Indigenous communities, and businesses work together toward a shared goal of caring for a place.

We're grateful to our partners in Skagway for welcoming our Crew into this important work and for demonstrating what regenerative tourism can look like in action.

Protecting the places that inspire us

Every destination has its own story, landscapes, and ecosystems worth protecting.

That's why environmental stewardship is about more than one day or one month. It's an ongoing commitment to supporting the communities and natural environments that make travel so rewarding.

Throughout June, our Crew participated in projects that reflected the unique needs of each destination, working alongside local organizations and community partners to create a positive impact where it mattered most. Because when local knowledge meets enthusiastic volunteers, even small efforts can create lasting results.

Every action adds up

It's easy to think that meaningful environmental change requires one grand gesture. In reality, it's often built through thousands of thoughtful ones.

One bag of litter collected.

One shoreline restored.

One tree planted.

One afternoon spent volunteering.

One conversation that inspires someone else to care.

Taken together, those moments become something much bigger.

World Oceans Month was a reminder that creating an epic sea change isn't just about where we sail. It's about how we show up for the people and places that welcome us along the way.

Here's to healthier oceans

The ocean has always been at the heart of every Virgin Voyages adventure, and protecting it is a responsibility we're proud to share across our Crew, our Sailors, and the communities we visit.

We're incredibly proud of every Crew member who volunteered their time throughout World Oceans Month and grateful to the local organizations whose partnerships made these initiatives possible.

Here's to healthier oceans, thriving coastal communities, and finding new ways to leave every destination just a little better than we found it.
