Pride Month at sea: joy, visibility, and community

A word from Nathan Rosenberg, our Chief Marketing Officer, on the importance of year-round allyship.

Virgin Voyages

With Pride Month around the corner, we welcomed a visit from Virgin Voyages’ Chief Marketing & Brand Experience Officer, Nathan Rosenberg. In this special guest entry, Nathan shares a few thoughts on the meaning behind Pride, the importance of year-round allyship, and what Sailors can expect from Virgin Voyages’ onboard Pride celebrations this June.

This June, we’re celebrating Pride across our fleet with space for connection, self-expression, and community — while recognizing the history, activism, and year-round work that made Pride possible in the first place.

There are plenty of ways to celebrate Pride. You can take the parade route. You can dance until sunrise. You can gather your people and make a weekend of it.

Or you can take it to sea.

At Virgin Voyages, we believe Pride deserves joy, glamor, connection, and a little mischief (but never without meaning). Pride was never just a party; it was born from protest, shaped by activism, and carried forward by generations of LGBTQIA+ people who fought, and continue to fight, to live openly, safely, and equally.

That truth matters.

It matters because Pride did not begin as a marketing moment. It began as a demand to be seen, to be respected and to belong. And it continues today because of the organizers, artists, performers, activists, and community leaders who put in the work all year long to create spaces of visibility, support, and celebration — often without enough credit, funding, or fanfare.

So when we celebrate Pride onboard, that’s the spirit we want to honor. Not just the sparkle, but the substance. Not just the energy, but the people and history behind it.

Pride deserves more than a theme. There’s a difference between decorating for Pride and actually making space for it.

For us, Pride on board is more than a campaign wrapped in bright colors and a good playlist. It’s an energy and an ethos that is welcoming. Intentional. Human. Pride creates an environment for LGBTQIA+ Sailors to connect, celebrate, and exhale — and for every Sailor on board to know their individuality is respected, their self-expression is welcome, and that belonging is not up for debate.

That’s also why allyship cannot be seasonal.

Pride Month matters, deeply. But year-round allyship is the standard. It lives in how people are welcomed, how they are represented, how spaces are programmed, how language is used, and whether the experience genuinely feels inclusive once the headlines, hashtags, and themed cocktails have packed up and gone home.

The goal is not to show up for Pride because it’s June. The goal is to show up in ways that matter, all year.

A Toast to Pride

As part of this year’s onboard celebration, Sailors on select voyages can take part in A Toast to Pride, an interactive cocktail quest that unfolds across our fleet.

It’s designed to be playful, immersive, and a little unexpected. When you board any of our Pride month sailings, you’ll receive a clue-filled card holder that sets the experience in motion. Each clue leads to a signature cocktail in a different venue onboard, with recipe cards to collect along the way.

From On the Rocks and Sip Champagne Lounge to Loose Cannon, Draught Haus, The Athletic Club, and The Manor, all our onboard watering holes are getting in on the action. This experience invites Sailors to explore the ship, discover something new, and share the journey with the people around them.

Yes, it’s fun — it should be! But it’s also only one part of the Virgin Voyages celebration of Pride Month. Because Pride is bigger than any one activation, party, or night out. The point is not the drink; it’s the connection. The conversation. The freedom to be fully yourself in the company of others doing the same.

Whether you’re sailing with your partner, your chosen family, your best friends, or setting out solo and meeting new people, A Toast to Pride is designed to bring people together in a way that feels social, stylish, and genuinely communal.

The community built Pride, and that should never be forgotten. Long before brands arrived with glossy campaigns, LGBTQIA+ communities were already doing the work.

They were organizing marches. Building support networks. Raising money. Creating culture. Fighting policy. Making art. Holding space for one another. Creating joy in places and moments where joy was not always easily available.

That legacy isn’t background context. It’s the foundation.

So any meaningful Pride celebration should start there: with respect for the people who built it, and with some humility about our place within it. We’re not here to explain Pride back to the community that created it. We’re here to celebrate it thoughtfully, participate in it respectfully, and make sure the experience onboard reflects the openness, visibility, and conviviality Pride has always stood for at its best.

Pride at sea hits differently. There’s something about open water that changes the mood.

Maybe it’s the sense of release. Maybe it’s the adults-only atmosphere. Maybe it’s the fact that once you’re onboard, the usual noise falls away and what’s left is time, energy and room to just be.

That’s what makes celebrating Pride at sea feel so distinct. No rushing between venues. No fighting for reservations. No trying to hold onto the moment while logistics get in the way. Just the freedom to settle in, connect, and enjoy it.

One minute you’re poolside with champagne. The next, you’re at dinner with new friends, headed to a live performance, or dancing in The Manor long after sensible decisions have left the building. It’s elevated, a little rebellious, and unmistakably Virgin.

And when Pride is done right, that atmosphere becomes more than a good night out. It becomes a feeling — one of visibility, ease, and belonging.

Sailings featuring A Toast to Pride

This year, A Toast to Pride will be available across these voyages sailing during the month of June:

Scarlet Lady Voyage dates: 5/31, 6/7, 6/14, 6/24

Valiant Lady Voyage dates: 5/31, 6/7, 6/14, 6/21, 6/28

Resilient Lady Voyage dates: 5/30, 6/4, 6/8, 6/13, 6/18, 6/22, 6/27

Brilliant Lady Voyage dates: 5/28, 6/4, 6/11, 6/23

Across every sailing, the aim is the same: create moments that feel celebratory without losing sight of what Pride actually means.

The final night at The Manor

For Sailors who complete the cocktail quest, the celebration culminates on the final night of the voyage at The Manor.

It’s our closing moment. A little glam, a little playful, a lot of joy.

More importantly, it’s a chance to celebrate the people you’ve met, the energy you’ve shared and the kind of community that can form when people feel comfortable showing up exactly as they are. That’s the part worth holding onto. Not just the spectacle, but the atmosphere around it. Not just the event, but the feeling it leaves behind.

Pride celebrations aren’t the ones that simply look vibrant; they’re the ones that make people feel seen.

Come celebrate Pride with us. Pride deserves celebration. It deserves joy, glitter, music, late nights, and unforgettable memories.

It also deserves honesty about where it came from, respect for the communities that built it, and a commitment to allyship that lasts longer than a campaign window.

That’s the spirit we’re bringing onboard this June.

So if you’re joining us this Pride season, come ready for discovery, connection, celebration, and a voyage that makes room for all of it — the fun, the freedom, and the meaning.

Because Pride should never be reduced to a theme.

And belonging should never feel seasonal.
